Creating a Mindful Workspace: Connecting Your Environment to Your Life Purpose
As an entrepreneur, I often find myself reflecting on how we can mindfully connect with our work and our life purpose. From a feng shui perspective, your career and life path are closely linked to your workspace. This could be a home office, a traditional office, an easel, or even a kitchen counter if you’re a stay-at-home parent.
Instead of providing a checklist, I’d like to share a few questions to help you connect with your space and some suggestions for setting up a workspace that truly supports you. Don’t feel pressured to adopt all these suggestions—just pick one that resonates with you. Even a small change can significantly impact your life.
What Does Your Workspace Mean to You?
It’s a question that might not have crossed your mind, so you may want to spend some time journaling or talking it through with someone you trust. Is your space set up to help you achieve your goals? The ideal setup will vary for everyone. For instance, someone with a corporate career might have a dedicated office, while someone running a small creative business may be working from a corner in their apartment.
Reflect on how you feel about your workspace. Is it a place where you want to spend time? Does it provide enough space for your type of work? Understanding your feelings about this area can offer valuable insights.
Do You Feel Secure and Comfortable?
Regardless of what your workspace looks like, feeling secure and comfortable is crucial. This means having a good view of the room while you’re working. When you’re at your desk, can you see the main entrance to the room? This positioning helps you feel in control and reduces the low-level anxiety that can occur when your back is to the door. Symbolically, it also helps you see opportunities coming your way.
Do You Feel Supported in Your Workspace?
No matter your job, it's important to feel supported. If you’re a stay-at-home parent, do you have the necessary support to care for your family? If you work a corporate job, do you feel supported by your team?
If you feel you need more support, consider the chair you use. Is it comfortable and functional? If possible, upgrade to a high-back chair for better physical and energetic support.
You can also use feng shui principles to invite more support. The Qian area, or Helpful People sector, can be activated to attract more assistance and support in your life.
Are Your Work and Life in Balance?
Examine your boundaries between work and personal life. If work is encroaching on your personal time, try turning off your devices and putting away work materials at the end of the day. This ritual helps create a clear boundary indicating that your work time is over.
Assess your relationship with electronics. Many of us spend considerable time on computers or phones for work. If you feel drained by screen time, listen to that feeling. Placing black crystals like black tourmaline, shungite, or obsidian in your workspace can help absorb excess energy and prevent overwhelm from electronic devices. Additionally, adding a plant to your desk, such as a snake plant, can offer protection and support.
Embrace Your Space
Connecting mindfully with your workspace is a powerful way to align your environment with your goals and well-being. Small, intentional changes can create significant shifts in your personal and professional life. Reflect on these questions and suggestions, and choose the ones that resonate with you to create a workspace that truly supports your journey.
